Sleepy Hollow Cemetery
This painting was commissioned by someone who saw the Oxford Churchyard
painting after it had been sold and wanted something similar. I went to
Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, which is not far from where I lived in
Westchester, NY, at the time, and took a large number of photos from all
over the cemetery. I wound up painting this one because I really liked the
pose of the statue, and I thought it would make a good focal point. I found it
interesting to paint this one after having done the Oxford one. All of the
gravestones at Sleepy Hollow are much more recently placed as compared to
the Oxford stones, and most of them are still in good condition. It gave
the whole painting a very different feel, despite the similarity of subject
matter. This painting is currently in a private collection in Texas.
